This was the first time I watched real Formula 1 cars driving, spinning and burning rubber from such a close distance. I knew about the excessive sound produced by these cars from watching Grand Prix races on television….never did I imagine that the power of these engines make your ears scream for protection. But now I know! What a superb spectacle did we witness on the 31st of August at VKV City Racing in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. For sure I want to experience these F1 and other race monsters again!
City of Rotterdam
There is something about the city of Rotterdam, something massive. The port of Rotterdam is the 3rd largest in the world after Shanghai and Singapore, creating spectacular activity on the river Maas. But there is more. Rotterdam was severely bombed in World War II, where the whole city had to be rebuild. And still today the city keeps on developing and rebuilding itself. Rotterdam is worldwide known for its impressive architectural achievements.
It’s the no-nonsense and forward-thinking mentality that stands out. The city keeps on surpassing itself, time after time. Further, higher, more extreme, no limits. The word ‘limit’ is not even in the dictionary of the people of Rotterdam. They want to prove the world that Rotterdam is very much alive….the place to be!
And I can fully acknowledge that. I said it before, but I keep on repeating: Rotterdam is my favorite city to visit in the Netherlands! Last year we stayed in Rotterdam during the World Port days: 3 days of spectacular activities on and near the water. Read all the articles by clicking here. And this year we returned for another spectacular event…
Rotterdam City Racing
World Port Days, amazing architecture and festivals….how to impress people even further? Well, as being the coolest city in the Netherlands why not organise a race where incredibly fast cars torture the asphalt of the city’s roads?
And that’s exactly what Rotterdam did! For the 10th time the city organised the VKV City Racing. Lamborghini, Bugatti and cool drift cars. Highlights were definitely the Formula 1 cars of Kimi Raikkonen and the Dutch F1 newby Max Verstappen (only 16 years old!). I can hardly explain the speed and the noise these cars make, it’s incredible! You certainly need ear plugs, but the adrenaline rises to the limit when these guys pass by.
Our son was totally impressed by all the cars, best day of the year for him! Rotterdam Partners offered us VIP tickets, offering the possibility to watch these race monsters from very close by. We could smell the burning rubber of spinning cars, felt the ground next to the track shake, what a sensation. My best memory is the sound that came from within the city when a Formula 1 car approached. A rolling, cracking sound that echoed between the buildings, warning us that something big was coming.
Rotterdam is a vigorous city! You will not be dissapointed by the vast number of events and festivals throughout the year. Of course the city also has a lot of other fabulous things to offer. In upcoming posts I will show you some family activities as well as one of the most remarkable hotels in Rotterdam (or even in the Netherlands): Hotel New York. But for now, just enjoy some short videos of spinning cars and burning rubber!
We were invited by Rotterdam Partners to visit the VKV City Racing. If you intend to visit Rotterdam, you should consider buying the Rotterdam Welcome Card (RWC). It offers discounts of 25% and more at 50 attractions, museums, restaurants and places of entertainment in Rotterdam and 1, 2 or 3 days of unlimited travel with RET metro, tram and bus. You can order the RWC already ahead of your visit.
You might wonder when the next Rotterdam City Racing takes place? This has not been announced yet, so keep an eye on the website if you intend to visit.
